That was it! In the haste of re-running, I had forgot to set that environment variable.
Build succeeded!
Summary of what was necessary:
1. Forking the repo
2. Creating a branch based on my desired release target `5672`
3. Applying my patches to that branch
4. Applying this change (manually): https://bitbucket.org/chromiumembedded/ ... 914b160fa2
5. Running `automate.py` with the `--url` and `--checkout` options (full runtime options and env variables can be seen in the previous responses of this thread)
