Is CEF dead?

Postby maffle » Mon Mar 08, 2021 6:53 pm

I just learned the other day "by accident", that the last stable version of CEF is based on Chromium 78 or 79. That was actually a huge surprise and more of a shock to me, because of so many software using CEF, one of the bigger ones for example Steam.

Why is CEF lacking behind that much, where latest Chromium is 89 now?

Thats a huge security concern but also a performance issue.

Lots of important patches were made since 79, which for example would cause GPU drivers to crash on Windows or perform badly.

Is CEF still being developed? What is the reason it is lacking behind that much to stable Chromium?

Where do you get your information? The latest version is 89, same as Chromium stable. https://cef-builds.spotifycdn.com/index.html

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromium_ ... _Framework

says: Stable release 78.3.9+gc7345f2+chromium-78.0.3904.108[1]

If you open Steam (latest beta to make sure it is latest version) web browser chrome://gpu it says:

You can see from the Skia renderer it is CEF 79.

Also looking at the driver bug and performance fixes:

it is very old compared to latest Chromium 89:

Especially the workaround "disable_decode_swap_chain" is important, because it causes Intel GPU driver to crash on Windows if you play videos through Chromium.

Obviously we have no control over the frequency of CEF updates in Steam. I suggest you contact Valve Software.
